Can a one party system be called a democracy?

castros

As we know the Cuban government is ruled by only one party  “the communist party” and Fidel Castro in multiple speeches has mentioned that Cuba’s government is one of the most democratic governments of the world.

A one party system consist of one party, one ideology to rule a complete government. In the voting  ballot you will be presented with candidates of only one party. Just to have an idea imagine in the past US elections we only had Senator McCain as a choice for president! Will that be a fair election? Will that be a truly democratic election?

You have probably guess my answer. If my choice in the ballot consist of only one candidate or candidates of the same party then there is no real choice!

Choice means to be able to choose between different things, Different ideologies to even cross boundaries. In multiple occasions I have voted for the candidate of the other party that I am not register for on the general election and that has happened when the candidate of my party gives me the impression that he is not fit for the job of the presidency.

Now in Cuba as we have seen in the last 50 years the only way to see new faces in power is by the leaders dying or getting seriously ill. Like it was the case of Fidel Castro. Is it posible that even within the same party there is no other able individuals? or is this something else? What do you think?

It is also curious to see that the top position was passed from brother to brother that is from Fidel Castro to Raul Castro. I have not live under any monarchy but this sure feels very similar to what we have learned from history  books passing of power between family members.

Fidel Castro claims that Cuba is one of the most democratic countries of the world. The reason for it is that he manage to get a very high percent of voters to vote while in countries like the US is rare to get more than 90% voter turn out.

I remember when I was in Cuba I was force to vote. If I did not vote, the system would have taken measures against me. Those measures could have being for example me loosing my rights to study or to work etc. That explains why they get such a high turn out.

Is there anyone opposing the government?

The  government contents the opposition to the government is a small minority. If it is so then what is the problem with allowing them to form political parties and to be able to vote for their own party?

We can guess is not as simple as the Cuban government assert. We can see that already almost 2 million Cubans has abandoned the Cuban communist experiment. Tired of promesses that are never deliver and of not having any  other choices.

So the so called one party system really fails to prove that  is the legitimated ruler  appointed by the  people of Cuba.

While one party systems are able to take prompt decisions since not too many people are necessary to convince of the right approach to solve a particular problem they lack the compromising that happens in multi-party systems were the opposing parties have to make concessions to each other and multiple competing solutions are offered as posible best solutions to problems facing a nation.

If we humans were able to guess all the right decisions then every decision taken by a one party system will be the best but as it turn out Cuba is an example of why a one party system conduces to full systemic failure of the government.

This negotiations are key in finding best solutions. We also get the added benefit as voter’s that we can unseat any party that fails to deliver on the promeses it makes. This is an excellent incentive to motivate politicians to work really hard at solving the problems.

In a one party systems like Cuba’s  the incentive is not there since they will get elected anyway. That is why we see the Cuban system unable to satisfy a minimal standard of living to the citizens and citizens only option to change their live is to go on exile.

So cuban citizens are voting with their feet. Aproximatelly 2 million have voted that way presumably there is millions more in the island that given the opportunity will also do the same.

  1. must democracy be of western standards and values? the American took Montesque recommedation of democracy, as you know the french adopted a diffrent ideology, and yes the British are diffrent. here I ask again if the Americans and the Brits had practiced one party system in the past hundred years would you be complaining or attacking one party system.

Further I believe one party system can provide strong and good democratic governance with time, howevr those countries that has been unsuccessful in the pratice of one party system are just emerging from extreme communism.

I agree there is multiple ways of giving power to the people.

But when a system repress any other dissenting point of view and people are place in prison or even executed for having different solutions to problems in society than the ones impose by a government it makes it impossible for me to call that a democracy. A one party system is a sure road to this
    state of affairs.

I have experience both system and there is a big difference with regards to freedom on both therefore that is why I do like better the western style of democracy where each can have different solutions or opinions about each problem and not the “Cuban style democracy”. In all honesty we should not called democracy since what gets done in a system like that is what the top hierarchy of the communist party wants. That is the ruling class and nobody
else have a say in that.

what l want to know is that, cant different idealogies be merged in the one party system of governance? for l think and that different idealogies can be thought of but the best one chosen for governance. people opt for multiparty because of greed for power and massing wealth. there would be no dictatorship or clinging to power by some leaders in miltiparty system. arent people supressed in the multiparty system? l believe democracy can be traced in one party system.
