Yoani Sanchez blog pages are blocked by the Cuban goverment.

I am translating from Spanish the text that appeared today in Yoani Sanchez Blog. She is a Cuban woman, one of the few that have venture into the bloggers world. The Cuban government have responded by restricting the access of her blog to Cubans.

This is her picture and her words

“I confess that I have given in to misbehaving. I rebel myself against orders, I look for lemons that do not appear, I demand for excuses that never arrive and, a great nonsense of mine, put my opinions in a Blog - with photo and name included. As you can see, with these thirty two years of age- I am so impertinent that is time for a corrective action on me.

So the anonymous censors of our famished cyberspace, have wanted to lock me up in a room, to extinguish the light and not let my friends in. That, translated to the language of the internet, means to block my site, to filter my page, in short, “to puncture” the Blog so that my compatriots cannot read it. For two days Generation Y has been only an error message in the screen of many Cuban computers. Another site blocked for the monitored internet users of the Island.

My words, and that of others bloggers and digital journalists have made the staple of inquisitors do its ridiculous role. With these pretensions of rebellious adolescents, we have gained the slap on the face, the severe wink and the quarrel. Nevertheless, the reprimand is so useless that it’s a pity how easy is to circumvent and it turns into an incentive.”

Please, if you are a fellow blogger and like to help this brave Cuban woman and also help the Cuban people then post her post on your blog to spread the word about her struggle. In this way we can show solidarity with her cause and show we want freedom of expression as guarantied by basic human rights.

Her site is mainly in Spanish but she has some pages in English

    Hi Yoani,

like also many other hundreds thousands of italian people I saw you and heard your words on TV, “Le Iene” italian tv program. It was great to realize about your enthusiasm for life, your strong will and smile. I found your blog online and I want to write you few lines of solidarity and of compliments for your blog.

It is true that more and more people will know about your story and will visit your thoughts, not only in your country but in whole world: it is the power that cannot be stopped of Internet web connections.

It is true that in today worlds people are hardly looking into the eyes of other people in a friendly way. Also for this reason it is so hard to find the right words to say “oh, I am sorry, I beg for your pardon”. The only occasions that are still existing when using the magical words “I am sorry” is when the other person is looking at you with angry eyes, using angry voice, looking a terrible giant and with a weapon in hands.

It is the same in the international situation between the nations: it is true and clear to eyes that the more powerful the nation is, the more strong violent voice and action it will have, the more “I am sorry” or silence and “no comments” when a voice is required they will get.

The power of violence and of threat, in the singular or global situation.

When all of this will change? Times they are a changing, a famous ancient song of Bob Dylan says. Do you know about this song also there in Cuba? The singer was singing against the power of any and each bad political power and guidance. His words are evergreen, isn’t it true?

Ciao! Good luck for all things, I will follow you and your blog with joy.

Greetings to you from the United States, where I have just posted an entry regarding Ms. Sanchez on my own blog page.

The link to the entry regarding Ms. Sanchez is: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/shoreacres/comment.html?entrynum=23&tstamp=200804

I have been deeply moved by her story. She has many important things to say even to us, who have so much freedom. I am taking the liberty of posting the conclusion to my essay here, as a small gesture of solidarity:

“In my last blog, I touched briefly on the moral and ethical dimensions of art. Regardless of the medium, decisions are made by artists at every turn. Am I working for myself alone, or am I willing to consider the world in which I live? Am I willing to accept responsibility for my creation, or will I refuse to engage criticism or disagreement? To the extent that my art touches other lives, what effect do I wish to have?

The same questions of morality and ethics arise in blogging. It is easy for us to forget that decisions are being made on a daily basis because the process itself is so easy: you make coffee, you turn on the computer, you begin to type. It is even easier to abdicate personal responsibility. Challenged or rebuffed, facing disagreement or simple misunderstanding, we can choose to turn off our computers and walk away, leaving a trail of words, photos, videos, cartoons, and .gifs in our wake without consequence. Alone in front of our monitors, we are free to consider only those who choose to make their presence known to us, or we can imagine with sympathy and attentive curiosity the faceless ones who also read our words.

The simple fact is that we need to stop, and think about what we are doing. I do not mean to argue here for one kind of blogging over another; this is not a criticism of cartoons, videos, or smiley faces. It is not meant to be dismissive of casual or shallow posting and, above all, it certainly is not a rejection of hanging out and having fun on the internet. All those things have their place. But, when I think of Yoani Sanchez, their place is quite beside the point.

The point is this. Imagine Yoani Sanchez, leaving her house on a delicious April afternoon with lime-green espadrilles on her feet, a flash drive in her pocket and a map to the nearest internet connection in her head. Imagine her languid smile as she slips past the guard, her studied casualness as she sits at a rented computer and draws her treasure from her pocket. Imagine her relief as the latest set of entries uploads properly, fleeing to the safety of German servers. Imagine, then, Yoani Sanchez with an additional ten minutes of allotted time, deciding to indulge herself in the luxury of a quick surf across the net. With a click of the keys, in a sudden, unbelievable instance of serendipity, she arrives at your page, and begins to read.

    What would Yoani Sanchez think?”

Thank you for making your page available, and best wishes to all who come here to post and read. May our ability to communicate with one another give each of us increasing courage and joy!

    my best regards,

    Linda

    ============================================================

    http://www.camagueyanos.com/wwwboard/mensajes/74880.html
